What is your opinion- do you think face primer is essential if wearing foundation? Or just a pricey gimmick.

Yes it is if you want your makeup to last.

I don't use it and my makeup lasts all day. I think it depends on your skin :)

Well, how about if you have oily skin?

Oily skin definitely. needs primer, especially if you use a liquid foundation. Once your oil starts seeping through your makeup, it won't look as fresh as before. Easiest way to find out if you really need a primer is to stick with one foundation & test it out - a week using a primer underneath & a week with out. Overall, its "supposed" to make your foundation (& other things youve applied) to last all day and make it remain flawless. But hey, I does work different. on different people.

If you have oily skin primer is a must!! The best for oily skin that I have tried are...Benefit porefessional and Tarte poreless.

Even if it doesn't help make your foundation last incredibly long.. It creates a smoother surface to apply your foundation so it glides on better. That's the main benefit I see with it. I use a quite matte and heavy foundation and I have to use primer beforehand so I can blend it easier on my face.

I agree with Tyra. I have very oily skin and yes it is a must for me. Best discovery I have ever made :)

I have oily skin and I have tried primer, and I love how my skin looks but it tends to feel sticky. I don't know if its the primer unused or if I used too much. I'll have to try again I guess. thanks girls.

I use it and I find it does help- as long as you find the right one for your skin type. I don't use mine everyday though. Just when I know I jave a very long day and need my makeup to stay as fresh-looking as possible.
There are so many primers to choose from, and at different price points, so if you're debating it, have a thorough look around! Body shop has primers for as low as $15.

Totally not essential! I have dry / normal skin and I find no difference when I use a primer versus when I don't, as long as I have moisturizer on or something for my foundation to stick to :)

It's personal choice just like the other ladies mentioned if oily skin or even combo skin it helps set and last but make sure your primer has the same shared ingredients. We have come along way with cosmetics most stuff we didn't have 10 ,8 or 5 years ago, all the products out is really your choice to find out what works best for you. It's application and choice :-)

I have normal to dry skin and do not use a primer under my foundation. Tried Smashbox Photo finish primer for about a year and found it is not necessary. My makeup stays on just fine without it. I do use primer on my eyes. Makes my eyeshadow last longer, eliminates creasing and helps the color pop. I think its like Alma said it really just depends on the persons skin whether you need it or not. From reading this post it looks like people with oily skin can benefit greatly from using a primer.

Yes. I mean now with bb and cc creams around. You could use one of those instead. But with regular foundation, yes. Otherwise you will never be happy with the wear of your foundation.

Depends on the makeup product and how it lasts.

I use elf primer and its only $1, because I don't want to spend a fortune on a primer. I think it makes my makeup stay on a lot better than without it.

I have very dry skin and primer is not necessary for me. Having said that, I do frequently use it for additional SPF protection (on days when I'm not wearing my Missha BB cream with SPF 45) and to "smooth out" rough spots that might be recovering from breakouts.

Otherwise, a good dose of moisturizer and eye cream is enough for me.
