I've been getting some e-mails from a couple of Beautylish users about how to become a cosmetic chemist. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about the field and I'll be glad to help you out as much as I can. :) It was hard for me to figure out how to get into this niche career, so I want to help others out who are interested in pursuing it.
Cosmetic chemistry can branch into many kinds of jobs, but when it's mentioned it's mostly referring to becoming a formulator of skin care/makeup products. It's definitely a growing field and an interesting aspect of cosmetics to be a part of!

It was a career I wanted to pursue until I found out it takes years and years to become qualified. :(

@Andrea: Yes, the field does require at least a Bachelor's in chemistry or another science, although I highly recommend going the chemistry route over biology. You really don't need a degree further than a Bachelor's though.

@Melissa: Have you inquired about any internships in your area? That's how I got started. Also are you interested in formulations specifically?

No I haven't I really didn't know where to start so I would look into that. Thank you!

@Melissa: You can also check out the Society of Cosmetic Chemists website! You don't have to be a member to look at the employment page. It's where I found my first internship. :)

@mica o. I look at the website but all the jobs needed 5 years experience what type of jobs should I be looking for?

@Melissa: Got your message via my website! Which state are you located? Are you looking only at the main SCC page? The California chapter has some positions I believe for beginning scientists.
In addition, I'd just inquire with these companies anyways for possible opportunities. With the current job I have now, I applied and didn't get a response until nearly 5 months later! Never hurts to send in a resume to a company. :)
And don't get discouraged right away. It honestly takes time and dedication. I was applying for internships for four years before a company finally agreed to try me out. So if this is something you really want to do, just stay resilient. Cosmetic chemistry is still a very niche field.

@Talia: I am doing the Master's program right now at UC! I really love it! My favorite class so far has definitely been the second part of the cosmetic formulations class. Let me know if you have any questions about the program!
@Melissa: NYC is a great place to be at for cosmetic chemistry. :) I'm sure you can inquire with a lot of manufacturing and supplier companies for entry-level jobs and internships.
If you guys have any questions, perhaps the best way to contact me would be via e-mail: lilyXREN@gmail.com. I check that more often than my Beautylish account.
