I use a wedge shaped makeup sponge and dab it on, it's not as good as some ways but it works :)

Get a wedge sponge, wet the tip and add the colors you want on the sponge blended in and start dabbing on to the base nail color. it works great.

The wedge make-up sponge works best for me also acrylic paint. Sometimes I have a hard time with polish b/c it soaks really fast into the sponge.
