I use scissors to roughly cut then use a razor to fray and thin parts. After that washing makes it look more natural.

Use scissors to cut in the places you want destroyed then wash them, it helps give it the distressed look...also if you're making high waist shorts you can use a seam ripper on the ends.

Fold the sandpaper to make it easier to hold. Rub the sandpaper gently over each area you want to distress. Continue rubbing the sandpaper back and forth until the jeans begin to look worn. Be careful not to over-distress them which will cause a hole to form in the fabric. (However, if your goal is to create a hole, then continue rubbing the sandpaper on the jeans until a hole forms.) it helps to wear the jeans while doing it. Then just wash the jeans before wearing and tada!
