I want 2 high light my hair /w lemon juice but I'm not sure if it works. Tips?

I've used lemon juice and it lightened it a lot but when I went to do real highlights my hairdresser said it could have not worked because the lemon is bad for your hair so I'd just go to a professional for highlights.
