Eyeshadow help please

Ladies I'm a newbie to wearing and trying eyeshadow. My question is what am I doing wrong? I prime, I try to use the correct brushes I try to blend I moisturuze but it still comes out looking uneven, spotty and dull. Should I be wearing matte shades? Am I wearing the wrong shades? I've tried drugstore brands and Mac so is there a particular brand I should try that maybe more suitable to my skin tone and texture? I don't know so please help any positive suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Get smahbox photo finish... its amazing.. try it you put it on after you've done up your whole face blush and all you put it on right over your blush and foundation
