If her main goal is to just grow her hair out I wouldn't dye it at all. if she does feel the need to dye it I would say temporary dark hair color not permanent, reduces damage.

I like the coloring she is now, personally. She could also just embrace the red tint in her hair, and dye it an medium brown red/auburn color, reds are very popular right now- not to mention gorgeous! But! If she wants to take out the red tint in her hair she could always go to sallys or any other beauty supply store and find a brown that's as close to hers as possible and stick with ones that say A or N for ashy or neutral- both of these undertones in the color will eliminate the red-ness. Also tell her to be very careful if she does lighten because if her hair has a red tint to it now, it will probably pull orange/yellow/brassy-ness if dyed blonde. so you'd need to do the same thing with bleach and use purple/blue based toners to remove that! And the best bleach I've ever used that has very minimal damage is ion's creme lightener infused with argan oil! It's amazing! Also, she should use a neutral protein filler on damp hair 20 mins before (and leave it on during) any hair color process, color/bleach/toner any of these, use a neutral protein filler! This will help the color come out even root to tip, and eliminate damage (because it's putting the protein the coloring/bleach will take out back into your hair) it's a life saver & deffinite must for coloring hair! good luck xo.

I think that the color she has is pretty.
But she could go darker!
