Some people need to use heat and some don't...if you have very straight natural hair I suggest using a curling iron..
I agree with Lola I think you'll look great with soft big curls/wavy hair...
use a curling iron/wand with a bigger barrel...since your going to use heat I strongly suggest using a heat protectant before you start...
start from the back and underneath hair first...save the front from last its just easier...section your hair off and have a comb at hand...before you curl each section run a comb through it...some people also spray each section with hairspray right before curling..I prefer not to, but youll find what works best for your hair type...
any way start at the tips and go as close to your roots as you can hold until you feel the heat through your hair on the curling iron and let it go...
I also recommend pinning every curl with a bobby pin..repeat until your finished and then loose all your pins starting with the ones you did first of course..
then you can loose your curls up for that softer look with your fingers or a soft paddle brush...
spray with your favorite hair spray and shake with your fingers lightly...
also it looks like you have bangs...idk but i wouldnt curl them just blow them out away from your face itll look better :)...sounds like tons of work but its not..practice makes perfect hope this helps :)
