How to Match Foundation Shades to Skin?

Sooo I'm about to buy a new foundation and last time I did I ended up picking a slightly paler shade than my normal skin (only because I guess my face has discoloration and the make up lady said I could go a shade lighter or darker than my normal shade. *sigh*) Anyway I was wondering, what is the best way to figure out the foundation shade closest to your skin color? :)

Test it in your neck. That way, you need to blend down less and you won't look like a floating head with two different shades. If your neck is way off from your face, use your jawline for testing foundation color.
