Doing my own hair vs doing my friends hair.

I can't do my own hair but I can do everyone else's hair perfect and I can do almost every hairstyle. Yet the only hairstyles I can do on myself are the side Dutch/french braid, a pony tail, bun...just the basics. Any tips for getting better? How did any of you learn to so your hair?
