So I just got a new pair of doc martens. I wear a size 5, so I got a size 5. They fit pretty tight. Is there a way I can stretch them without ruining the shoes?

Old school shoe stores and shoe repair places will stretch shoes for you. I had my shoes for my wedding stretched because it was summer and my feet tend to swell a bit. They can add about 1/4 to 1/2 size depending on the leather. If the docs are pleather I'm afraid there's nothing they can really do.
I've broken in shoes by wearing them with thick socks for a few hours at a time. You can try that, since it costs nothing but your time.

I also agree with the thick socks idea! I usually wear thick fluffy socks in new shoes around the house
