One of my favorite non-customs was the Meet Matte Nude palette from the Balm because of one or two colors and the amazing quality of the shadows. Having said that I was always disappointed that MMN lacked some really basic highlight colors and also had no matte black. Who makes a matte nude palette and doesn't have a matte black? It just makes no sense to me.
So I decided to bite the bullet and create a custom palette with the Balm eye shadows from their individual shadows collection. It was 16 colors, the palette and shipping for under $70. That comes out to just over $4.00 a shadow, which is a really good deal. It gave me a chance to pick up some of the nude basics that the MMN palette was missing and add to some of my favorite shade families like green and purple.
The palette got to me two days after I ordered it and I'm so pleased with the quality. The palette itself is similar to the Meet Matte Nude, it's made of heavy paper and has a magnetic clasp to hold it shut. The only thing I worry about is the shadows just pop into the slots, there's no magnet or glue holding them down so I don't think I'll travel with this. It's a bit big for that anyway. My metal aveda and makeup geek travel palettes are better suited to that.
I have some glue dots at home so when I decide on where the shadows should go in the palette, I'll glue them down that way. It's a minor quibble, but I feel like the balm should have sent something like that along with the palette.
The quality of The Balm shadows is excellent. Next to makeup Geek they are my absolute favorite: pigmented, blendable and they DON't fall out. Before I'd only used their matte shadows, but I picked up a few satins and I LOVE THEM. They have a nice subtle shimmer without being glittery. I can wear them in my tear duct without fear of glitter settling into the fine lines under my eyes.
I hate having to reach for two or three palettes to do my eyes. This custom palette solves that and is still manageable to hold in my hand while I'm doing my makeup. HOORAY!
