How to put on eye liner right?

I can never get my eyeliner to not smear and get it on without messing up, does anyone have tips? Thank you.

I like layering mine, starting with a gel then setting it with a powder shadow. I made a YouTube video about it that is really helpful. http://youtu.be/bB9ea0v3_uA
