I've been wearing 22k gold earrings since I was a baby. Recently I picked up a pack of silver stud earrings from h&m and after wearing them for a few days my ear started bleeding and I realized it was probably because I was allergic to them. I'm planning on getting a second ear piercing and I really like the way silver looks on me, but if I do decide to get a second lobe piercing I would also have to change my gold earring into a silver one because I want to keep the earrings consistent. However I'm worried that I will have another allergic reaction even if I get a higher priced pair of earrings. What do you ladies suggest when it comes to the type of earring to get?

I can almost guarantee that any earrings you buy at a fast fashion place like H&M are silver toned instead of actual silver. Sometimes they are made from zinc alloy or brass, and sometimes it will be a complete mystery. Stainless steel earrings are some of the best of you prefer silver toned jewelry and are more readily available, but if you want a brighter silver you want it to read "sterling silver" on the product label.

I was looking at both sterling silver and stainless steel earrings. I'm leaning more towards sterling silver. What exactly is the difference between those two and are they both safe?

Or is one more safer than the other?

Stainless steel doesn't tarnish or corrode under normal circumstances and is much more durable than silver, but actual sterling silver is safe for most people. Functionally speaking it's going to be more about which tone of metal you prefer.

Would this be the real and safe sterling silver? It doesn't mention the amount of karats it has.

Silver doesn't have karats, sterling silver has.925 silver in it which is the highest you will get, wear silver or you can even wear white gold especially since you having an reaction

As far as I know you are not legally allowed to label something as sterling silver if it does not meet the content requirements to be labeled as such.

The pic she's inquiring about says sterling silver, just telling her how much silver there is in sterling silver...

I'm only able to wear certain silver jewelry in my ear as well. I discovered this after wearing Piercing Pagoda earrings too many days in a row. Did a little research and discovered that some companies add nickel instead of copper to their silver jewelry. And not always in the correct ratio mandated. I'm not allergic to nickel, that I'm aware, but I noticed that I have no issues with Pandora's jewelry at all. I also have several body piercings. I was unable to use the normal jewelry as they were just stainless steel. I'm guessing that it's because of the nickel. So I use neometal and anatometal instead. I have it in my second hole, tragus, conch, high helix and navel. No issues. Just do some research; you'll be amazed at what some companies do to save a buck here and there.

I've purchased sterling silver earring from Claire's because I'm allergic to nickel. But typically, it's just plated. It wears off and ends up irritating my skin. Just invest in gold jeweler to avoid he issue.
