How to care for combination hair?

My hair is medium thickness and naturally blonde. I'm growing it out, and I want to ditch heat completely so it will be healthy. The problem is, the top is almost completely straight and the bottom is extremely wavy, almost curly. This isn't a result of the top half being weighed down. It behave this way even without product. Does anyone else have this problem? Or does anyone have any ideas of how to care for and style this hair type without using heat? I'm open to trying almost anything!

My hair usually goes like this if I've had it pleated or in a bun and I normally just back comb the top part of my hair and either put it up into like a high puffy voluminous ponytail or I will put it in a quiff type of style and wear it down

I don't actually have any pics with my hair like how I've described but I do something basically identical to this
