I've heard mixed things about using a heat protector. some say it damages your hair but then I've heard it's good for your hair. What are your thoughts?

I depends on how you use it. spray only a little on the Parts your applying heat bc if you overly spray it it'll defeat the purpise5.

I have been using the Pro Naturals Moroccan argan oil leave in treatment applied to ends & 3/4 up hair shaft on damp hair since 2014 (when my hairdresser introduced me to the product) but I also see that Karmin have a Heat Protection & Shining Spray which also contains argan oil which may be an easier application option for me as long as I follow M.G.'s comment and do not overly spray!

That truly depends on the heat protectant.
Tresmee is a cult favorite for some reason, yet is loaded with drying alcohol so I can't see why anyone would think it's protecting their hair.
I find the mechanics behind spray heat protectant's questionable. Most are loaded with alcohol or are only meant for blow drying - not flat irons.
I personally prefer serum based protectant's. You can always test them out by applying to your hands and carefully blow drying to see which one deals with heat the best.
I use the ITS A 10 Leave in with keratin. It's a leave in with a bit of heat protectant (due to the silicon in it) when my hair is wet. I stretch it by blow drying and then apply my serum based heat protectant.
Heat protectant's work, just make sure you choose the right one as there are tons of cheap formulas that dry out hair.

Heat protecting products don't actually shield your hair from heat. The best ones create a lightweight smoothing action that reduces friction, which is the part of heat styling you can actually mitigate. That's why the Tresemme is so popular. The alcohol in it evaporates pretty quickly leaving behind the friction barrier.

Try to use ones without chemicals, like coconut oil

Totally agree with Kitty! Most heat protectors are just drying, however you have to find the right ones. I also love the Its a 10 Plus Keratin. And my mom uses one from Rusk and if works great (I've tried it a few times). I know a lot of people also like Chi's heat protector but I prefer the Its a 10 Plus Keratin (I don't like the regulars Its a 10 for heat styling; so thats why I like the Keratin - orange lid).

Kitty, in response to "you can't see why anyone would think it's protecting their hair" maybe because they aren't aware of the damaging properties in the heat protectant. not everyone is educated on that kind of stuff. they just see "heat protector" and pick it up.

I guess I'm confused on what they do lol. I straighten my hair daily. what type of product could I use to make it less damaging?

Any product that smooths the hair shaft prior to working with heat tools will mitigate at least some of the friction damage, but it's physically impossible to prevent actual structural damage from heating your hair. If it were possible to prevent the action that occurs, you would inadvertently stop your hair from being heat styled in the first place.

Shauna I use Pro Naturals Moroccan argan oil (see my comment above) it is 100% argan oil without any alchohol and I apply to damp hair prior to drying & heat styling. I normally wash my hair every 3-4 days. Have been using argan oil after every shampoo since 2014 and can say that my hair has not suffered from heat damage but it is very shiny & smooth, no flyaways and my hair is dead straight so I use my heat styler to curl under my short hair.
