Contact lens intolerance

Hi, I have strong short-sightedness with a power of about -7. I use glasses. But, I hate that nerd look with thick glasses. So, I purchased contact lens so that I can wear them during special occasions. The doctor has advised me to handle it with great care and hygiene. But, I find it very difficult to use contact lens and it irritates me very much as I experience strong itching in my eyes while using them. I think that I have got contact lens intolerance and is planning to visit a doctor in ( http://www.herzig-eye.com/eye-conditions/contact-lens-intolerance/ ) Toronto. Can this condition be cured? What will be the treatment procedures be like? Please give some genuine replies and suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Dr Herzig is the best in Canada, and internationally respected. He's a lovely man too, very quiet and laid back, I'm not sure if you are seeing him or a physician who trained under him, but it's a phenomenal eye clinic, and they will have a solution for you ( I'm Canadian, I used to live in Toronto)

Are you considered a permanent solution, such as laser? I don't want to scare you but I have been wearing contacts for 32 years, I have a huge astigmatism, a -4.5, and I've had abraded corneas over the years, and once you reach 40, your eyes really deteriorate. Plus, if you like to travel, it gets a bit nightmare like since planes are bloody filthy, I wear my glasses all the time now after getting a terrible eye infection on a Vegas flight where I really damaged my eye. Now that you mention Dr Herzig, he's the only clinic I would trust in the country, and I'd love to have my eyes permanently fixed so I don't have to use bifocals, reading glasses, etc. I think you would avoid all this if you had them done properly by that team, if you are so interested.

I had wear contact lenses for 12 years and I can tell that the first times using them can be very uncomfortable. I had trouble applying them, it took me like and hour to put them in both eyes, so my eyes got super irritated and wouldn't stand it. So if you apply them with care, this won't happen.

Another thing is that you may be using them on the wrong side. They've should teach you what side of the lense is the correct one. If you apply it wrong, you'll feel super super uncomfortable (itch, pain, plastic stuff on the eye) and you'll want to take them off as soon as you can. Just change the side of your lense and try again :)

Do baby steps with contacts, don't irritate your eye too much trying to wear them. And go to the doctor if you have any doubt, he will advise you better than any of us :)

I just reread my last post and I wasn't very clear, I only wear glasses flying, I still wear contacts daily, but my vision isn't perfect, so I am considering laser with a top surgeon.

I've been wearing contacts for years and I have the same problem sometimes. It could just be something seasonal like allergies that are causing the itch but if it's something more long term I would suggest only wearing them for short periods of time or seeing a doctor if the problem persists:)

All I'd want to advise on here is to stop wearing your lenses until you have seen your doctor, just to be safe. depending on how strong the discomfort is, it could just be that your eyes are too dry or you might need a different kind of lenses or you could even have a reaction to your cleaning solution. but of course only a doctor can give you the proper advise. :)
