What you want to do is get one solid shade of either shadow or a soft kohl pencil, appliy it to the whole lid then slowly blend upward, then you can soften the edges with a cork/tan shade to ease the gradient effect.
She adds "Fire to smoke ladies lighten as it fades up" and that is perfect advice!
"You can kohl the base like thick liner and get a shader and spread it up, then blend, then go back into the lid and deepen the shade again."
This is an example of a burgundy smokey eye. Is that what you mean?
I'm asking because that is the definition of a smokey eye but nowadays on Youtube they'll tell you everything is smokey and then you don't know what's what!

Could not have said it any better than Breeze ^^^:)
I only want to add one thing. When blending, make sure to use a separate clean blending brush, otherwise you'll just muddle the colors together and it will just look messy. Got that info from a Robert Jones course I took.

You agree with breeze but I would blend the colour/clours into the lash line to make it even more smokey.
