What's the difference?

I was wondering that the difference was between a licensed cosmetologist and a licensed makeup artist? Many of the makeup brands that give pro discounts have a discount for makeup artists separate from cosmetologists. In my state, it's illegal for anyone to do makeup and call themselves a makeup artist if they do not have their cosmetology license. Thanks!

Just from what I can see cosmetology extends further than simply makeup. It seems they are also experts in hair, skincare and as well makeup. A makeup artist is just skilled primarily in makeup.

In Utah cosmetology is basically just hair. You cover basic makeup application, basic nail, and basic esthetics.

In Washington, cosmetology is about 80% hair with styling, cutting and coloring. Then like 15% esthetician work and only about 5% makeup.
There was literally only about one chapter of makeup.

In Washington, being a makeup artist isn't a licensed profession.
So, you'd pretty much have to go out of state to a makeup artistry school and pass that in order to be able to get a makeup artist discount on a bunch of brands

Thank you everyone! My state doesn't have any makeup artist schools, so I guess I'll have to stick to cosmetology. I'm starting at the end of February and I'm definitely going to have to learn a lot about all the rules.
