I wonder if a salon would give you any chances?

Oh my gosh, ever since I left Macys I've had absolutely no luck in finding ANYTHING. I was working at the Benefit counter, but unfortunately the one I worked at (through Macys) was small and no one knew the store itself was open. They were scattered too and more times than not, had people calling in sick just for them to be forced to come in because of how much they missed and they start crying or the gossiping which was like reliving high school. Yeah, it's everywhere but I'd rather be paid at least $10-$11 or keep the $9.50 and get commission (I live in California, and I got no commission on the $9 salary. I could barely afford groceries and bills!). I want to desperately go into makeup artistry, but I'm also a college student and need a job where it will break me in and I can get some great experience with product and people. Any tips? I've applied to a lot of places who won't response to me (Nordstrom, Ulta, Sephora, etc.). Thank you all so much.
