Well if you really want a nice looking messy bun it does take quite a bit of work :( its best to start with some curl/ texture in your hair, here's how I would go about it though: make a ponytail, then take small sections of hair and twist lightly, then pinch the hair in the center at the very bottom of the strand and gently slide the hair upwards ( this should cause a slightly messy clump of hair near the roots) pin this into place and continue around the rest of the ponytail :) I will post a pic in a few minutes

Can you try using a donut? That would add thickness to the bun part and then you can arrange your hair around it.

Add some curls and pull them apart with your fingers. Tease your roots and spray some voluminous hair spray into it. Twist your hair into the bun, pushing forward on it so it gives you volume on your crown. Keep a few curls on your neck and around your face. Good luck!

After you get out the shower put some mouse and curl cream in your hair and than towel dry it, than let it air dry for a bit. Your hair should appear thicker or you could just blow dry your hair with a round brush and than curl it and do the bun.
