So I recently started delving into makeup and found I have sort of a knack for it, and I decided I want to go into the career of either a regular makeup artist or a movie makeup artist. Still not sure which, I have a passion for both. Any tips on how to get to the point of being a professional makeup artist. Like working for urban decay, movie companies, etc. I know it won't be easy if I wanna make it big, so any help I can get is greatly appreciated.

Attend a school specifically for being a makeup artist.
There are a few, I'd Google and find one that's in your area or one that suits what you're looking to get into.
As far as movies... It's kind of a mix of talent and knowing the right people.
IMO, knowing the right people comes first because I've seen some makeup artists that work in some films and television that aren't that great at doing makeup.
Talent plays a roll but being a makeup artist is kind of a competitive area, there are quite a bit of people in the field but if you want to do film work I'd move to LA if you're not already there or try building up your areésumé and try to get into doing makeup for independent films or just getting some work as a makeup artist at a news station or something along those lines

You're going to need your license if you want to do makeup and get commission for it legally, most states DO require license, I know recently Arizona passed a law that doesn't require license to do makeup and get paid. you need to attead a school, problem about that is that most cosmetology course will have you doing hair, nails and skin care etc.and very few makeup relations, there are very few schools that are strictly makeup VERY few and you need to make sure your state will accredited that school. thats my my problem I'm not interested in any of them hair or nails, so yeah. as far as movie its more of knowing the right people in Hollywood you could have little talent but if you know someone who has connections its a done deal. try mac sep.

Actually a lot of states don't require a license
I'm only certified and most MUAS I know are at most just certified, plenty are self taught.
If you want to do movie makeup I'd recommend a school like MUD for special fx, on the other hand I'd skip mud if you were just going for beauty.
I personally went to chic studios, I don't regret it. I got a lot of opportunities through them.
Most states require a license if you'll be removing something from the body, ex: hair, cutting nails, waxing, etc
Also in some states most companies will want to hire a MUA that can do hair as well, so you may just want to go to cosmetology so you can cover your other bases while also teaching yourself makeup
