Do you know what kind of acne you have? If it's cystic, a dermatologist will most likely have to treat it with a cortisone shot. (It sounds scary but getting your eyebrows done hurt more and it shrinks it down really small and gets rid of the pain!).
The best treatment for blackheads and whiteheads is to get them extracted by an esthetician, this way you only focus on healing and not slathering on a bunch of different ointment/creams that may cause irritation and trigger more oil production and make the situation worse. Your dermatologist may have an esthetician in office who can perform an acne facial. You can also check out Yelp and Groupon for some good deals.

For products to help your skin, using a gentle cleanser is important. You can opt between a cleanser with Salicylic Acid if you have a lot of clogged pores, One with Benzoyl Peroxide or Tea Tree to help disinfect the acne. I personally rotate cleansers depending on how my skin is acting (Peter Thomas Roth Salicylic Acid Cleanser, Rotational Therapy Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser, Shea L'occitane Cleansing Oil, Nude Cleansing Oil.)
Follow up with a gentle toner ( I like Thayers Aloe Vera Witch /hazel toner ) and a good treatment to help with oil production and acne without drying out your skin ( I use a chemical exfoliant... Paula's Choice 2% BHA Exfoliant.) Definitely make sure to moisturize using a lotion with no fragrance (Synthetic or Natural ) and making sure its alcohol free. I like CeraVe's line of cream and lotions for this.

No physical scrubs... this will spread bacteria and are irritating to skin... especially acneic skin. Last thing you want to do is trigger more acne and oil production.

I don't have a dermatologist with my insurance. it's mostly whiteheads and blackheads, but my skin is so sensitive it's painful.

Estheticians aren't covered by insurance, so you could always look on Yelp for reviews and see what you can get with Groupon. An acne facial can range between $35.00-$110.00 depending on the area its in. I've done mine at a natural themed spa where it's $35.00 and very relaxing, and in my dermatologist's office the esthetician there cost me $80.00. I usually preferred doing them in the derms office as I would go get my acne extracted and then a chemical peel with my derm and a cortisone shot if there is a lot of swelling. Double check that your esthetician specializes on doing facials with patients who deal with acne... very important!
