I fancy changing up my hair a bit as it has been the same colour all my life. A lot of people are telling me not to mess with it, but I think it could lighten up my look a bit. I want to lighten it a few shades and do balayage highlights. What do you guys think?

Ps,
My hair has never been coloured and is in a very healthy condition. Also really bad picture of me but oh well.

This is the the colour I would go for.

The upkeep is what I'm worried about, ideally I would like it to look natural enough for it to grow out nicely. If I went a few shades darker than the photo and did a slight ombré would that work? Also I'm really not a fan of unnatural colours.

I have very dark brown hair, it's nearly black but in the sunlight it's brown. I absolutely love lighting it up with a partial balayage. I go between a blonde ish brown to a soft ashy brown. I'm no hair expert but when I get it done they lighten it up a lot (bleach?) using the balayage method and then tone my hair all around to the desired color. It's a good grow out too. I maybe do the actual balayage once or twice a year then get it toned in between.

Also I should add that the toner in between is necessary for my taste. I'm pretty sure it's because I have dark hair. If it's been a while it will get too bronze.
