The reason it probably stings is a combination of the charcoal with way too much fragrance and added menthol, of which the latter two are not good for your skin. Perhaps people are seeing results in terms of acne but they're likely doing undue damage to their skin with those ingredients included in the formula. You can get better results with a simpler, more gentle formula as part of a well-rounded skin care regimen.
