I love how these waves turn out but they only affect my ends. Does anyone know how I could get the waves to start at my roots?

You could try to start the braid thing higher up on your head, but it looks like to me that this type isn't supposed to start at the root. You could try putting your hair in 4-6 tiny buns all over your head (I believe they're called Bantu knots) and leave them in overnight. I do those sometimes and they look very natural and start at the root. Best of luck! :)

The 4-6 amount, depending on how much hair you have, would give you nice curls that would relax to tighter waves throughout the day but I'm sure you could brush through to get the kind of waves in the tutorial you linked.
