I have pretty dark, thick, long hair.which would be best if going light chocolate brown. I've gone to 2 different sallys and one said 30 the other said 20?? what's the difference, what's better?

20 volume developer lifts hair color 2 levels and 30 lifts 3. so figure out how much lighter your desired shade is and go from there. be careful with roots since they are closer to your scalp that is a heat source and they will get lighter faster.

20 developer has around 6% peroxide.
30 developer has around 9% peroxide.

Either would work. A 30 developer just processes faster.

At the salon I was able to bleach my cousins deep dark hair blonde using a 20 developer, it just takes longer you just have to make sure it doesn't dry out and it should be fine.
20 developer works slower so it's easier to get an evenly bleached.

If you're not wanting to be waiting around for a couple of hours then grab a 30 developer, just know you have to work faster and your hair for even color and due to it having more peroxide it is a tad more drying.

The difference between the volumes of developers is that 20 volume gives 2 shades of lift, and 30 gives 3 shades of lift.

Honestly, go with the 20. Using a stronger peroxide right off the bat isn't the best idea, especially if you haven't bleached your hair before or aren't very experienced with it. 20 in my experience works exactly the same as a 30 vol but you don't have as much stress on your hair so less worrying about it snapping off everywhere. You'd be better off having to bleach twice with 20 vol then to leave 30 vol on your hair and risk over processing it right away.

What I understand from your question is which peroxide ti use with a light chocolate brown, and your hair is dark. I would use the 30 vol. peroxide. But if you are planning to bleach it first use the 20 vol. peroxide it will be less damage.

I won't be bleaching it, just the color on top of pretty much virgin hair because its grown out already. will 30 be too damaging?

Thank you ladies for your responses :)

If you use 30 just with the hair color it won't be damaging.

I agree with Shaye. If you can get away with 20 why damage your hair more than you need to to get your desired result:)

Oh I scrolled too quick and didn't notice you'd made a decision. Hope it came out great!

It depends if you want to go darker or lighter. Standard volume is 20. 20= 2 levels of lift.
30= 3 levels of lift.
