One thing ive learned is to make sure you dress for your size. Its human nature to want to cover your body with over sized flow-ey clothing and it back fires and makes the person look bigger. My advice is to play off your best asset and go from there. Good luck.

Never 4get that as long as you're comfortable in your own skin nobody else's opinion should matter. >$_$<

You can add more black if you want to give a slimmer illusion. Also flowy tops or flare jeans

I have a bigger build myself... And I find wearing longer skirts and vertical lines (even though I'm tallish already) help draw attention to the 'tall and slender' because they draw the eye along those vertical lines, not horizontally :)

I'm pretty heavy, but I have more "fashion forward" clothing than anyone else I know despite my size. You should stay away from anything "over sized," though I love the oversized looks, I suggest leaving it for smaller people. I stick with a lot of structural items. I'm a big collector of dresses, blazers, coats, jackets, and peplum tops. It doesn't have to necessarily be structural fabric, I am obsessed with a bunch of soft cotton peplum tops I've added to my wardrobe, I think my figure looks the absolute best in them. It creates the illusion of a slimmer and more defined waist without the use of an obvious waist belt (which has not made it into my wardrobe very often this season). I do have many structural fabrics also for when I am dressing a less casual. I rarely wear skirts and tops (I feel they cut my already short and round body in half) but I do have TONS of dresses. I find dresses look better on my figure than separates (pants or skirts and a separate top) and it seems to elongate me. I think looking for a structural, or tighter fitting bodice/top of the dress, with slight movement or pull away from the body on the bottom works the best. Wrap dresses (structural or ballet style), skater dresses, and anything labelled "fit and flare" are some of my go-to silhouettes for the past few years.
Look at the seams in items you buy, seams and darts are not only functional, but create movement within a garment. Look for princess seams in your dresses and tops, it creates a longer line on the body and creates a slimmer illusion because it pulls the eye inward slightly at the natural waist. Princess seams are two symmetrical seams that run vertical along a garment through the apex of your bust (extending both upwards and downwards, straight through the garment).
As for your style, as long as you like what you're wearing and put effort into your appearance, you'll look like a million bucks no matter what size you are. Even though I can't get away with every single trend I want to try, I always make sure to invest in styles and trends that work for my body type and make all of my outfits unique and interesting. Play up areas of your body you really like and downplay your "problem areas," if you have any specific areas you are especially self conscious about, let me know and I can help with them specifically. I also suggest investing in really cool accessories like handbags, shoes, and jewelry that you can wear with simple staple items that you like. You can make your favorite outfit transform into a million different looks with neat accessories. I usually invest in new "trend" accessories every season since its hard for me to find clothes that fit me and fit into seasonal trends. It can be difficult and frustrating at times (lots of trial and error), but the only thing that really matters is that you put effort into your look and like the end result!
