It's best not too cover it up because it will make it worse

That's not a helpful answer at all. Acne and scarring can make people incredibly self conscious, and that means not wanting other people to see those problems. In order to feel okay going places, covering them is just needed. Saying not to when asked how is just really not helpful.
@Beej, if you have redness, try using a color correcting primer or concealer in green to neutralize the red. For concealing, use a small brush to dab on a good, creamy concealer (Hard Candy Glamoflauge, Revlon Colorstay, Benefit Boi-ing, Bobbi Brown, just to name a few) directly on the spot and use a clean finger to pat around the blemish to blend the concealer. Don't directly touch the spot, as the heat from your finger and natural oils will smear the concealer off the blemish. Set immediately with a translucent powder using a small fluffy brush.

I use make up for ever full cover and I use a brush that's flat on top to pat the concealer into place. That way you don't need to worry about the oils from your finger and the germs from your fingers that can potentially cause future breakouts. Then just set it with a translucent powder. I would suggest that if you wear foundation, put on something of lighter coverage that will allow your skin to breath so that your pores won't clog up so easily again.

Thank you so much girls, this is really helpful! :) Also I have a lot of scarring from acne over the years (a lot of small holes), just wondering if there is anything that helps to fill them? I don't usually wear make up but when I do the holes are still very visible.

Stippling and buffing the foundation into the skin helps to conceal big pores and scars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLQiaO89IFc

I have acne scars and combination skin. What i use is Revlon Colorstay for oily skin because i notice my face gets shiny in the middle of the day, anyway, using a full cover brush will definitely cover marks better. My favorite brush is the Make up Forever kabuki brush. Its amazing!

I have those kinds of deep scarring where I have holes as well. They're crater scars and using a primer that helps with decreasing the size of pores will do the trick. Also, use tea tree oil on that area or a pore minimizer. It's helped me over the years.
