I had the same problem lillee! My natural hair is crazy curly and ive found that almost any kind of deep- toothed paddle brushes work really well. However, the key is to never brush curly hair when its dry. Use a wide toothed comb on it in the shower after you condition, and the paddle brush after you get out and apply your products. Conair has some great ones, but the one im using is some generic brand from the dollar store. As for your tender head, try a detangling spray or leave in conditioner before you brush :)
