Well a curling iron is the easiest for curls, I'd suggest one with a clamp not a wand, and just part your hair up with a clip starting from the bottom leave a small section then part your hair in the back down the middle so you have hair on each side and start curling with small sections on one side then do the other and hairspray the section after curling. Just work your way up your hair repeating that. Hope it makes sense and hope it helps! You can always YouTube it most girls curl their hair this way

^ as stated above, if you aren't very skilled, use a basic curling iron. A trendy looking curl can be created by just wrapping your hair around the whole barrel and curling it that way rather than using the actual clamp at all.
If you can get your hands on any professional products, do so! there are all sorts of hair primers out there now for before styling. Also, invest in a quality thermal protection and strong hold hair spray. this will help your curl hold throughout the day as well.
I strongly recommend spraying each section before wrapping it around the curling iron. If your hair can stick to the barrel by itself without you holding the ends, you're using enough!

I agree with Judy, but for a bonus, when u get out of the shower, use a curling moose, and when ur hair is dry, use a texturizer! GOOD LUCK!!

For beautiful tight curls I use a curling iron and then Reenforce the curls with flexi rods an in the morning if I want tight curls I leave them as is or for a more bouncy wave I comb them out with a wide tooth comb!!
