You won't be able to avoid it even with head gear. The damage wont be as intense but I thought the same thing when I tried it out for a month. Busted lip and a slight cut above my brow bone. If its something you really want to do....you gotta get over the physical downside of it. Its a great sport for women to get into but if you're more concerned about possibly damaging your face then you might want to look into something else.
