Have any ladies ever felt like somebody made you feel, that your dream of doing makeup is.NOTHING?! I will be 25 in March, 2 children, and I love the shit of makeup. Im a stay at home mom and engaged to be married. My husband respects my passion! But others feel like you cant "bring home the bacon" doing makeup alone. That may be true, but I love what I do! Some are suggesting I go to college. Not a bad idea, but if its not a school for hair, makeup, skincare, or anything else beauty related, you can say im NOT INTERESTED! Anybody else feel others don't appreciate their passion of makeup? I know I need a backup plan, but damn what ever happened to being happy with what you love? Owning my own photo studio, with mua's beating faces, and owning my own cosemetic line, I feel are not just a fantasy world. I feel like they are part of my dreams!

Although my parents have been mostly supportive of my career ambitions for special effects makeup (paying for my schooling, housing, supplies, etc.) I still feel like they wish I'd picked something else. It might just be me but I get that feeling because of how much they push my younger sister to go to a "real" college, so she doesn't "end up" like me. I haven't been consistently employed and makeup gigs are hard to find in my area. So I'm not doing the best, but I have ambitions and dreams far beyond just being a makeup artist. But I do feel like they think my schooling was a bust and that they wasted money on it. Yet at the same time they really don't have a good idea of how the industry works or how expensive some of the materials I would need to do special effects on my own are. But jobs in general are hard to find these days so even if I did go to another school for something else I don't think it would increase my chances of being employed. And its not like I have any more money to go to school with anyway, so I guess they will have to deal with whatever career I choose.

I understand exactly how you feel. The only thing is I've always had a passion for hair. But they're both in the beauty category. But anyway, my mom used to tell me the same exact thing, that i can't really make money doing that & that I should make it a side hobby instead of my career. I had convinced myself afterwards that i could go to school for nursing, & didn't go past the 2nd day. I instantly knew that it wasn't for me & that I couldn't force myself to do anything other than my true passion. It took me a few years to really start pursuing hair though, because I was ashamed everyone would look down on me for not wanting to do something "up there" like being a doctor or lawyer or something. No offense to anyone who is or wants to be one of those things but it just isn't for me. Now i finally have that confidence to go after what i really want to do & not care who doesn't like it. I'll be starting cosmetology school this year & working in a hair salon soon afterwards. That's only my short term goal though. When I'm through, i want to own a whole chain of beauty salons. I wanna take this thing all the way.

SORRY FOR BEING SO LONG-WINDED! •_•

I'm an aspiring mua and while no one has ever come right out and said anything unsupportive to me about it I still feel like my fam doesn't really take me seriously like I'm just playing around and it's never going anywhere

Thankx ladies for all your stories and insight! I just feel like because im at home with my children everyday, people feel the need to tell me what I should do to make money! It is so frustrating, my fiancee told me to quit my job to be with the kids because it was so difficult to find a babysitter. I take damn good care of my kids which is a "job" if you ask me! When I quit I started a youtube channel and built a free website. But everything went on hold because I realized I needed a better camera, more upgraded makeup supplies, and a better editing system. So now im pretty much at home reading makeup books, practicing, and watchimg youtube vids until I get the money. I plan on getting back.on youtube really soon and pick it back up! But now since i have stopped everyone wants to suggest what I should do to make money! Uggghhh it makes me so upset! I know people are trying to help but I just feel like aspiring mua's deserve more respect for their craft, and art, just an aspiring doctor would. That is all!

I work full time for a cosmetic company AND freelance all the time - I make more $ than most of the office professionals I know and comparatively the same as I would have if I'd finished nursing school and definitely more than I made as a loan officer! Plus it's way more fun! If its your passion you WILL find a way!

I am actually on your same page but my thing is my self-doubt. Like I buy a lot of makeup. I can do makeup on my self and everyone tells me to go to beauty school (I graduated from college a few years back) and I love beauty it's my passion but I just don't know if I CAN DO IT as a business. It's weird... but there is no worst feeling than having self-doubt or having others doubt you for sure! Stay up! I say do what makes you happy and you can never go wrong :)

I say go for it! I went to nursing school, completed, and am now an RN and I still contemplate going to cosmetology school just because of my interest. I think you have a great idea! People will always utilize your craft and as for you, Brittany. I have a friend who does hair but wants to return to school for nursing. Her situation is envious! She can still work, set her own work schedule and make good money while she attends school! It's never too late to do what you want to do. Hell, I wanna be a barber, hairstylist, forensic detective...

Follow your passion and screw what anyone has to say about it. I get a kick outta dream killers (folks that don't support anothers dreams/goals) because they are usually the first one's wanting a handout when you hit big or say something like this;" I knew Stephanie was gonna blow up. I had her back since day one." When I quit my job to be my own boss I had a few friends and even family members who said I wouldn't be successful because I didn't have a college degree in hand ( I will in May 2013) and I disproved every negative prediction. I laugh everytime I see my retirement account every quarter while those same dream killers stress about their future security. Don't ever change up to make someone happy and definitely don't follow society norms because what works for one person may not work for the next. Stick to your dreams girl.

Kat T how did you get started? I am in the exact same boat and people tell me I should do it but I'm the one that doesn't think I will make enough money, I wanna live comfortably and LOVE what I'm doing but idk how much I could make in the providence/ Boston area being a makeup artist and I don't wanna spend 20k on school for it:/ I'm so torn I don't know what to do!

Raisa I have self doubt sometimes too. But the best way to get through that is the love you have for what you do. I heard a good saying someone told my husband. "Don't do something just to make money. If you have true passion and love for what you do, the money will come." I couldnt agree more! People get so caught up with making money! Now dont get me wrong, I want alot of money lol, I would love to not have financial worries. Yet money means not a damn thing to me if im unhappy. Who wants to a million dollars a year with an unhappy career? I dont! I know what im going to do! I have a plan. And as long as I try my damn hardest I wont feel like a failure, even if it ends in zero dollars! Makeup is a passion for some but a lifetime acheivement for me once I get to where im trying to go. Raisa go to school dont hold off any longer you can do it love and dont let anyone tell u cant. You can do it as a business. Makeup is your business. Make it happen!

My parents and boyfriend have been amazingly supportive, mum told me years ago to do makeup and hair and I ignored her only to years later take it up proof I should always listen to my mum! Haha but I find other people (distant family, boyfriends family, acquaintances) tend to turn their noses up at me a little bit.
It's what I love and that's it. The only support I need is my parents and boyfriend :)

I could cry sometimes. When i was 16 and choosing my college choices my mom told me i wasnt allowed to do beauty because its what dumb girls do when they cant do anything else. Today she actually said to me 'you should be a makeup artist because you know so much about makeup'. Cheers mom. Great input. I already have a really good job and i cant afford to give it up to pursue makeup as a career now.

Thanks Love! I thnk you ladies are all right! As women we get so many stones flung at us. So much objectification that we have to deal with on a daily basis the last thing we need is others or ourselves holding us back. We still have a glass ceiling in society we have to break and we can only do it by being beautiful, smart women who do things to the beat of their own drum. And My momma always told me if someone is DOUBTING YOU they are just reflecting the doubts they have about THEMSELVES... we should not let other people's fears become our own! Make the choices that you can live with, as women we sacrifice a lot already, time to do the things that do make us happy! Amen!

Thankfully my family has always been supportive of what I wanted to do. My first love has always been radio but I got in my way and never pursued it after college. I say if you love it go for it. Don't let people tell you other wise. There's so many people out here that are working in a place because of money. You're young so if anything happens you have plenty of time to do something else. My mom at the age of 31 decided to become a nurse (she always wanted to be) and my dad told her its a waste of time. Now my mom has been an RN for 20 years and is a nurse manager of over 16 clinics in NYC and my dad isn't working. She's the bread winner! LOL!

I've always loved makeup but never thought about doing it as a profession (because I let my insucrities get in my way) until recently. My mom and aunts encouraged me to pursue it. So now I'm learning different techniques and practicing and hopefully soon I can BEAT other peoples faces. GOOD LUCK and do what you love!

I think it's interesting that people you have never met take you more seriously than those that are supposed to be there for you. I know some gals that don't take me or my business very seriously, supposed friends that come to me for makeup help but then laugh at me behind my back for both my career choice (MUA) and my hobbies (pole dance fitness and crochet), but then I'm like... at least I have passion, creativity, art ... what do you have but wine, gossip, and Facebook? oooh ... that's right! nothing. BOOM.

Sorry, slight tangent/rant there ... apparently I have some latent irritation with this subject in my life lol  :D

@Stephanie: I am in the same boat but 10 years older than you. I know I need to do something if I want to obtain my dreams. My husband is supportive of what I want to do but, I have to find the money to invest in going to school to do it and that is hard with 2 kids. The haters in my life act like I'm too old to have a dream and that I need to just work in retail my whole life because that is what I've been doing the last 7 years. I don't want to HAVE to go to work. I want to WANT to go to work.
