I colored my hair a medium brown but for some odd reason my roots came out lighter. any suggestions on how to fix it?

If the brown was lighter than your natural colour this will happen.

You'll have to go at least the same level as your natural colour or this will happen.
Like if your hair is a level 5 then you can use all level 5 or lower shades but not a level 6 or higher because it will lift your natural re growth.

Depends on whether or not you've colored your hair before. Hair that's been previously colored vs natural hair (at your roots) absorbs color differently. Dyed hair is more porous and tends to absorb more of the pigment, thus making it darker. Also, FYI, that's why hair tends to come out darker than what's on the box. I always pick a color that's a shade or two lighter than what I actually want because of this. You can also lighten natural hair with box dye, but not dyed hair. I use lighter dyes solely for the purpose of toning for that reason (I keep it blonde right now, but it tends to yellow out after a while so I'll tone it with a very light ash color).
