My hair is really long, about to my elbows and is also really thick so whenever I try anything new with my hair it either instantly drops out because my hairs so thick and heavy or ends up flat. I'm not very good with styling my hair anyway but would love to get that messy, wavey beach hair look. Can anyone help?

What I do is take a shower, then put surf spray from not your mothers hair products as I gradually dry my
Hair upside down, I also put in a root lifter. After that I put on heat protectant and get a waver to wave my hair, it usually takes about
An hour to give me big beachy waves, once I am done with all that I put in surf hair by garnier frutis for texture and then voila, beach waves!

If ur not able to take care of ur hair maybe u should cut it... But if u want beach waves use a clipless curly iron

when your hair is wet, add some sea salt spray and braid your hair into a french braid. when it's about 85 percent dry take it out and blow dry the rest upside down with a diffuser and add hairspray hope this helped :)

First off, to pull of that style with long hair (I know, mine is thick and just at the top of my hips when straight), you need to have layers in your hair. Very choppy layers. The shortest ones I have are...granted that I haven't had a cut in about 6 months...about shoulder length. They have to be pretty choppy if you want it to blend properly if you wear it straight. Without a cut that can support it, your hair will just flatten like a pancake or get super frizzy.
Sorry to the above comment(s), but for me personally, attempting to encourage the natural wave that I have with a blowdryer ends in disaster. Even if models have naturally curly/ish hair, hairstylists will straighten it first and then add the curl back in. Why? Because blowdrying it like that will raise the cuticle and you'll get frizz. Braids work ok, but I personally don't like the texture of the wave it gives me. It's too regular and too flat. On me, it also tends to frizz out a bit at the end of the day although that might work for you if the flat-wave thing is what you're going for. If you're going for a Courtney Love post-grunge thing, by all means.
Otherwise, you need a good blow dry, at least a 1" curling iron, and a texturizing balm/cream/whatever.
