I need help finding an ash brown box dye. I tried Garnier Nutrisse Medium Ash Brown and it was crazy DARK. Everything I've seen is more warm toned and not even ash brown. I need something similar to the picture. It looks kinda grey but it's the best I can do. I don't have a picture of my natural color as I started dying it unbelievably early. Any recommendations would be great. Also any tips on how to get rid of gold and red tones. I know I'd need a toner but an exact name and where to get it is what I need haha. Thank you!

I would try the Revlon color silk. its really cheap and the colors are always dead on and make my hair suuuper silky afterwards! and they have like three shades of ash brown.

Try a purple shampoo. Like shimmer lights or any other one. Toner is more effective but also damaging since it uses developer and stuff. But if you use a purple shampoo you can control just how ashy you want it. If you want more ashiness you can always do it again and just use a mask on top. I'd also look into your water. If there's lots of minerals like well water it can get brassy quick. Home Depot or rona Or any hardware place has shower filters for like 20-40$. It can help a lot if your water isn't the best.

As for box dye, do you have a Sally around you? They have tons of real ash colors. That are labeled extremely well. It's less damaging than box dye but just as easy. It's a bit more expensive since you need to buy the dye (usually 2-7$ depending on brand) and then developer. It'll tell you how much on the box of the dye but it's usually a 1:1 ratio. Developer is pretty cheap though. My favorite brand is the ion one. It's in a purple bottle and it's not too runny like a lot of developers. Sorry this is rambly I can't see what I'm typing my app messed up and the keyboard is covering it lol

Thanks, Kyra! I've used it before and I looked at the ash browns and they're really warm toned and too dark. Thank you though! I love Revlon colorsilk and the price is amazing.

Alyx, I currently use Loreal everpure purple shampoo and it didn't do any toning. Well, it may have but I still have gold tones. I don't have anymore red but my hair sometimes pulls red with box dyes. Yes! I have a Sallys but my mom usually never takes me, she looks at it as a waste of money. No one in my family feels the same way about hair and whatnot as me. Haha. I'd definitely do it that way if I could!

Some purple shampoos work better than others. I can't think of the name but if you're shopping, open the lid and look at the color. The more vibrant and more blue toned the better. There's one sold at Walmart that is straight up navy blue lmao. It's scary to put it on, I toned my friends dirty blonde hair and she was like "no way this is blue dye I'm going to look like you" and it toned beautifully and she fell in love with it haha. I gave her the bottle though so I can't remember the name. But you also have to use it quite a lot at first, like every 3rd time you wash your hair till all the golden tones are gone. Then every week or two.

I understand, my grandmother is a ginger and I have dark dark brown hair, when dying it or bleaching it goes straight up red first. Light annie red lol. I would try and look for a box dye that actually says ash on it. And if you can, get a brand that's a hair pro rather than a brand. Like Marc Anthony (no idea if there's dye by Marc Anthony but it's the only one I can think of right now lol) rather than Loreal. I feel the ones that are made by actual stylists are much more true to the color.

Lol omg, the one I'm using is like pastel purple looking, I loved it although it didn't do anything because it smelled like lavender, a really strong lavender smell. But, I ran out the day before yesterday though so I'll pick some up tomorrow. You were so helpful! Thank you so much!! & yes, it's crazy. Haha. Is John Frieda considered a hair professional?

No problem! Glad to help:) and I believe so! I just find the actual names more reliable with salon knowledge than the brands with names like Loreal or gosh or herbal essences lol. I haven't used box dye in almost 8 years since I go to Sally instead, so I'm not much help, but definitely look for one that says ash, and looks ashy in all the "this is what it could look like" section lol.

Lol. For sure! As long as I find a purple shampoo that actually does something, I'm sure I'll be able to manage! I'm definitely going to comment on your wall rather than make a thread if I need anything else haha. If you don't mind. Thanks again, Alyx! <3.

Thank you, Madi!

I'd bleach it one more time to try and lift a bit of the warmth, and then try the Fabuloso purple conditioner, their conditioners are actually top of the line I used the red one whenever my hair was looking dull and it always revived it. Also be sure to use it a bit longer than usual so the purple actually has time to neutralize your hair as it's not a miracle worker! I personally find purple conditioner to be more effective than purple shampoo because you can actually leave it on. Also,'I think for that colour try looking for an ash dark blonde, because will show up darker on your bleached hair.

I used the Loreal ever pure line and although it smelled great, it didn't do hardly anything. Thank you! That was really helpful. I'll definitely consider bleaching one more time, I'm sick of the warmth that my hair pulls, it's annoying. That's what I was thinking! Thank you again! Haha.

Believe me, as a natural ginger who's gone red many times it's hard to get anything ashy 😒😒 I had dark ash blonde once in my life but the up keep was BRUTAL. The ginger struggle lol;) but definitely look into the Fabuloso conditioners, absolute lifesavers and they last forerve.

I'm hoping it won't be too bad for me, seeing how it's my natural color and all, I'll just switch back and forth from regular shampoo and conditioner to purple shampoo and conditioner. Just think, I'm considering on doing the "coke red" color in the future, it's going to be major torture on my hair, the addiction is real. Lmao! Thanks again.

This is my natural ginger (sorry for the ratchet picture form years ago hahahaha

And this is about as cool toned as I've ever gotten it. I go blue black now and it goes warm brown in about a week hahahaha, red is lovely but hard to recover from. I think you'll definitely be able to achieve this just be sure to take the time and invest in good product.
