Okay so I'm going to get a spray tan for prom in May because I'm ghostly. Only problem is I know absolutely nothing about spray tans. So if you girls have done it and know what it's like could o have some tips or just basics on it? Also how long does it last because I swim nine times a week.

I would say to get one now so you can test it out, see how your body reacts to it.

I agree with Sadie, do a trial one to make sure you like it. Also, try to find a salon that uses Versa. In my experience, Versa looks a lot more natural than Mystic. Make sure you exfoliate REALLY well before you go so you don't get any patchy spots. Most salons will have and try to sell you lotions to put on before and after. The post tan lotion, in my opinion, does nothing. But the one you put on beforehand actually makes it last a little longer. Try to do it on a day you don't have anything to do. Any amount of sweat in the first couple hours can turn it streaky. What else... make sure you follow the instructions in the machine. Some will do your front and back, others you have to turn around. And they go pretty fast, so you don't want to be stuck with your front being several shades darker than your back because you didn't turn in time! Oh and make sure you hold your breath when it's spraying! That's all I can think of at the moment, if I think of anything else I'll post it :)

I am a spray tan tech & esthetician so I can help you with any questions or concerns but I would highly suggest against going to a booth. They spray the same amount of solution all over your body and it's very easy for it to look unnatural. I spray more lightly on the hands, face, areas of the feet & a tiny bit more on the sides of your waist to make it appear slightly smaller while still looking natural, a booth cannot do that. Shower a few hours before and shave, exfoliate (not with an oil based exfoliant) & moisturize. it's important to do this hours before and not right before because products can cause a barrier between your skin and the solution but you still want your skin moisturized. Arrive with no makeup or deodorant, I supply makeup remover wipes. Arrive in dark loose fitting clothing if possible. I use Norvell solution and they don't stain but will rub off on your clothes until you wash them. Your tech will walk you thru the process and you may tan completely nude, which is very common, or bra, panties, whatever you're comfortable with. Afterwards, you want to wait to shower for at least 6 to 8 hours, a warm water rinse only, no products. Before your first shower avoid any moisture buildup sweating, rain, pools, mani/pedi, getting hair done & shampooed) You can wait up to 24 hours before showering, until your first shower the DHA will continue to develop. I usually like to wait about 12 to 14 hours. If you sleep with it on before you shower wear loose clothing and cover up so body parts aren't rubbing up against each other. The cosmetic bronzers will come off in your first shower, it's normal. you will be left with the tan from the DHA. if you sleep in the bronzers you may wake up looking odd, it'd be just like if you slept leaving a lot of liquid bronzer on, don't worry just take your warm water rinse shower and you'll be left with a beautiful tan. After your first shower you can go about everything normally. Swimming will speed up the process of your tan fading but it'll still last about 5 to 7 days. Don't use any oil or mineral oil based products or bar soaps and keep your skin moisturized after your first tan, this will help it fade more easily.

I would suggest getting a trial one, maybe talk to the spray artist and let her know you're new to this she may offer a deal for buying 2 sessions one now and one for prom. And don't let all my instructions scare you, I always tell my clients this is all the precautions for the best possible tan, but I myself have not done what I was supposed to 100% and my tan still looks great so if you forget a few things it's ok just do your best. I always send my clients home with info similar to what I typed out for you. Enjoy your prom & spray tan but like I said please don't do a booth! So many of my new clients are people who have used a booth and are now coming to me to fix it which is much more difficult. And near me the prices aren't even that much different, you could even check out groupon.

Thank you so much Sarah and everyone else! I appreciate it so much I think I'll do a trial one in a couple weeks and then one before prom(: good to know that the tan will last longer than I expected

I work at a tanning salon and we have a mystic and I love my spray tans. They look natural and I have no streaking problems.

I agree if you can find someone to spray you by hand in your area it is so worth the money. It gives you an even color and I feel like the color payoff is better. However if for some reason you can't find one close to you I also agree with a versa over a mystic.
