I would stay away from DIY's, they usually do more harm than good to the skin. Personally I like the Dr. Lin Acne Spot Corrector. It does a great job at lightening dark spots without causing damage to the skin. I believe you can get it at Walmart (I got mine in a beauty box and haven't need to repurchase it yet since a little goes a long way so I'm not really sure)

Vitamin e oil is great for acne scars but it doesn't work well on old scars. I had a lot of scars on my legs over the years from scratching and I used pure 100% coconut oil on them and it got rid of a lot of the scars. also try Mederma its amazing for scars. remember you won't see results overnight. it may take at least 6 months to a year

The vitamin C microdermabrasion product from the Body Shop is a lifesaver for me. I used it twice a week for 3 months and am not at just once a week. No notable difference the first 3 weeks but all my acne scars really started to fade after that!
