If your has never been colored it could be done without bleach. but if thats not the case depending how light. you will most likely have to bleach.

I think you'll have to bleach it.
Even if you dye it with a light brown dye you're still depositing colour into the hair which isn't what you want to do. Bleaching will remove colour from the shaft.
If you're worried about damage I'd recommend getting it done professionally rather than doing it yourself.

If you don't lighten it first, pretty much any color will most likely make it darker. Think of it like coloring with a crayon - the more times you color over the same part, the darker it gets. That being said, if your hair is naturally a little light, you could go darker on top and blend it out.

If you have virgin hair a hair COLOR can lighten your hair and you won't need bleach. but virigin hair. no color on it already.

I know this might seem crazy but I have attempted this myself for the same reason because I didn't want to bleach my hair , you can put some hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle and spray your ends and just let the sun do its job or you can put some baking soda with peroxide and some honey or conditioner and stay under lighting for no more then an hour and you'll see some results I did this to my hair and it came out nice I have an ombré affect as if I bleached it but I didn't hope this helps 😊

If you have virgin hair you should be able to get there without bleach. But it may take 2 dye jobs. I got a dark blonde dye a few weeks ago (no bleach) just to tone my ombré and stupid me put it all over my head thinking it wouldn't effect my brown and it lifted my whole hair colour to a coppery light brown. So it is possible but it's super iffy cause bleach will strip the colours an allow you to get whatever shade you want basically , but with just normal dyes you can't be that certain.
