A smokey eye is characterized as the darkest on the lid and fades as it goes into the crease and beyond. Apply a skin tone or lighter shade all over, from brown to lash line, then apply your midtone color in the crease, and then the darkest color on the lid. Make sure you're blending all the colors together, you shouldn't be able to see where one color stops and the other begins (:
