I'm going to a wedding this Saturday and I usually just wear my hair down and straight. I'm really not talented when it comes to styling my hair but do you have any ideas for really easy up-do's or half up/half down hairstyles that I could try for my layered hair?

Are you good with an curling iron? I've found a couple pretty ones that look fairly easy☺️

Of course maybe a looser curl with this one

Last one. Maybe a little more of a curl like the second photo?

I loveee these especially the 2nd one. I'm horrible with a curling iron haha. My hair is very straight and it doesn't like to hold a curl and I can't use hairspray because I'm allergic to it but I can still attempt to curl it.

Something like this would be really cute!
I would start by scrunching the hair with a holding product like some sort of mousse or light gel, apply heat protection, and then just grab at random sections (if your hair is thick do two layers) and wrap them around a curling wand, then pin them while they cool to make them last longer. Or sleep in some loose braids, damp them first, and then when you wake up you have some waves, then curl it. It'll make it more messy looking and casual and it'll blend more if the curls loosen or you miss sections.

I'd also like to try these hairstyles!! I didn't know you could use gels or mousses before applying heat protection for curling irons. Can I use a hairspray before and after curling to make it hold for longer? Could you recommend any drugstore brand products to apply before using heat protection for curling? Thanks!

Ashley - most mouse products are meant for wet hair, or for heat styling! They have different kinds. My favorite for curls is one by tresseme, it's a black can with red writing and says something like "heat activated mousse" which just means that it'll hold strong in the heat. I usually end up putting it in after I shower the night before then letting it air dry overnight, and curling in the morning with some heat protection.
And I also love the same line from tresseme, black spray bottle with red writing and it says thermal spray. But read the labels, this one is protecting to 250 degrees, if you use higher than that you'll want one that protects higher. I don't use high heat settings so this is perfect for me. Also make sure that you read the ingredients and make sure there's no alcohol in it.
I wouldn't use hairspray before, just because it'll basically be drying the hair with the alcohol in hairspray. But pinning in up then spraying it (my personal preference is to pin them all up, spray when I'm done, then wait 20 minutes, spray again and take them down, the spray lightly again and form it where I want it) but if you do need the extra hold and don't do it often, and do a mask when you wash next I think it'd be fine

I want to try sleeping in braids and then curling afterwards. I'm just scared my hair won't hold the curl and then it will start to fall out and look all puffy.

I understand. Do you have problems with mousse too? I know sensitive skin issues with hairspray and I totally get that! But mousse wouldn't get on your skin except your hands.

You could also try a sea salt spray, even a homemade one with literally water and sea salt lol. That would help hold it. I'd practice a bit first though. And the day of being a small thing of hair oil, that way if it gets puffy you have something to smooth it

And if all else fails, you look great with straight hair. So if it falls during the wedding it'd just go straight and would still look cute :)
At least you don't have the problem of it going curly like I do lol.
