If I were to use a highlighting cap but use brown instead would that work? I can't picture what it would look like in my mind.

Yes, it would but the cap is extremely difficult to use and they usually come out looking so bluntly placed. Personally, I would do it freestyle, it would come out looking more natural. Unless of course you're going for the blunt look.

I agree with Shanae. I've actually used foil (hair foil not the kind you buy at the grocery store) and using a a brush like they do at salons helps out a lot.
