In terms of subtle I definitely agree and think you should get highlights, around your face and throughout your hair. Balayage like someone said. It would look really nice.

I think you should do balayage since it's your first time (you won't have to worry about roots/youll still have your natural color) It would look so good!

I think a bayalage or an ombre would look incredible! Plus for someone who hasn't dyed their hair before, it makes it easier to manage because you don't have to worry as much of the roots showing. :) A red ombre/bayalage would be beautiful too, if you're ready for that step of course!
