Should I exfoliate my skin before or after doing a face mask?

Before so that the dead skin cells aren't in the way of the face mask, if that makes sense.

I usually don't exfoliate and put a mask on at the same time.. But if I did I'd probably exfoliate before to prepare my face and open my pores to allow the mask to work better(:
