I would do it before you take a shower so you can wash it out in the shower!

This is a dumb question but what's the point of a hot oil treatment?

Ramsha, hot oil treatments strengthen your hair, add elasticity, and add moisture back into it that you lose from heat styling and the environment around you.

@Ramsha

Oil treatments do depend on what type of oil you are applying to your hair. Different oils benefit in different ways... Rose-hip Oil can add softness to your hair, Avocado Oil can help strengthen weak hair and makes a great treatment prior heat styling, Argan Oil helps with elasticity and helps with dry damaged hair, Coconut oil can restore moisture and strengthen hair, etc..

The point of using an oil 'Hot' is because not all hair cuticles are the same.
Everyone's porosity is determined mainly by genetics... Porosity is referring to how hair retains moisture.
How porous your hair is determines how much a treatment will actually affect your hair.. Which is why a lot of times girls do treatment after treatment to their hair and find little result.
By applying a Hot oil to your hair ( or using steam.. a shower cap.. a hot shower cap.. water..) the hair cuticle opens up and allows the treatment to pass through.

To determine the porosity of your hair just grab a strand of hair from the front & back of your hair... lay it in a bowl of room temperature water and wait a couple of minutes.

If it sinks, you have high porosity meaning your hair obtains moisture easily (can also loose it just as easily.. common with bleached or chemically treated hair )

If it floats you have low porosity.

If it stays in the middle floats/and sinks you have medium porosity.

@Massiell
I apply a hot oil treatment prior to washing my hair as a pre-poo treatment especially if I am using a clarifying wash.
I do apply a little bit afterwards to help retain moisture.

I have curly hair as well, I wash my hair 1-2 times a week. I do a hot oil treatment once a week. I do it the day I'm going to wash my hair. I have a clean hair dye bottle and I put
olive oil
amla oil
coconut oil
(any conditioner )
mix it all up n put it in the microwave. I love the results of my curls after. they're bouncy, shiny n defined.
