I work for a salon.
we go 50/50 on whatever i make.
so say i make 600 i only get 300.
They do supply everything i need.
BUT, they have me working 6 days a week from 10am to 6 pm. i work about 50 hours a week.
when i want to leave early they dont let me,
i have to open an close.
i clean the whole salon not just my station.
i also work as the receptionist.
If i do all that wouldnt that mean i should be getting paid hourly?
or does it mean im basicly going booth rental and i should make my own schedual and clean my station?
please help!!
i dont know if theyre juss trying to skrew me over cause im resh to all this or what?

Wow that sucks Kayla. I would speak with your boss and tell him/her that you think you deserve more because of all the work you are doing. Hopefully they will agree and give u more money :)

U r absolutely being taken advantage of. If you are on commission (50/50) you should have to clean up after yourself and that is pretty much it. Does your salon have receptionists and shampoo assistants?

you should only be accountable for your station. if you are a cosmetologist then thats just it. a receptionist is a different job thetefore would require a different pay...not only the 50/50 but extra..unless you are cleaning the whole salon and taking calls on your own free will.

That doesn't seem legal at all. Do you get a paycheck with taxes taken out or do you have to report it all yourself?

Dec 29, 2012

Kayla S.

I have to report it all myself

I hate to give you wrong info, but there has to be labor laws you can check on in your city/county/state. Maybe contact the county and see if they can forward you to someone you can ask about this.

I agree with Yesenia. It's sounds like you're being taken advantage of but I'd look into the labor laws of where you live before you confront your boss.

You are considered a contractor within the salon. When you have to report all earnings for tax purposes you are essentially a contractor within a salon environment. I highly suggest you quit ASAP and move on because they are clearly taking advantage of you. That is one high bleeping split.....50/50. The owner/management is robbing you big time. Most salons just charge a weekly or monthly booth fee and with that you're able to work any schedule you desire. And since you are considered a self-employed contractor your ability to fight this via complaint with the state employment board is a mute point. They found a great loop hole to get around paying you fair wage to avoid paying what the state requires for businesses when having staff on payroll. Leave girl and don't look back.

A reasonable split is 40/60...35-40 hours a week and hourly pay for any work you do outside of your personal station

I am a cosmetologist also, and the 50/50 is pretty typical if you are an employee where they take care of your taxes products ect. It is also very typical of smaller salon owners taking advantage and in your case your totally getting ripped off. At the end of the day time is money, if they aren't willing to pay you for the extra work or adjust your commission then your better off somewhere else. Do they bring you tons of clientele or did you have your own coming in?

If you have a lot of your own clientele you could do chair rental, then you call the shots

You are being paid like a share cropper, all the work for a slice of the revenue of only your labor. I don't know where to begin but talk to the school where you trained and professionals at your level of experience to get a benchmark of what you deserve. Then find another job where they don't treat you like a slave. You deserve so much more!!

Also look into the tax structure. An employee deducts nothing, an independant contractor can deduct lots but only if it's well documented. Buy everything with a dedicated plastic card.
