What does a "cakey" face actually look like??

Foundation, I believe, becomes cakey because of the following 1) cheap foundation 2) using powder foundation
Also, it depends on the brand. Different products may require different types of strokes. Try using a makeup sponge maybe?

Plus I think not washing your face or moisterizing has a lot to do with it.

Its cakey when your foundation looks unnatural/you can tell the person is wearing a lot of foundation.

I agree to disagree with some of the pints above, why? Because I don't think the price of a foundation can necessarily contribute to how "cakey" the outcome will be, I've found plenty of good drugstore foundations and have been able to work with all of them after finding the right way to apply them. I think a cakey face could be caused by a few things; are you prepping your face right? Cleansing, toning, moisturising and priming? These things contribute a lot to how someone's skin will appear. (Smooth, etc)
Also depends on skin type, if you're using a foundation that doesn't work for a particular skin type that could contribute also as well as what you're using to apply the foundation and whether you're setting it incorrectly, etc.

I personally don't think the amount of foundation a person is wearing is always the case for "cake face" it's generally the application that matters most with foundation.

I typically sheer out the product by using less and buff it in with a fluffy brush, go over the product with a sponge (beauty blender), apply light amount of powder where needed, spray face with water.

There are multiple ways to get cake face. Another...wearing a full-coverage foundation and then topping it off with a full coverage powder foundation. I had a student last year who wear both together. I would cringe when I would see her in passing hours later...not a pretty look.

Just wash and moisturizer your face often and using a stippling brush makes foundation look better. BB cream doesn't look like you wear a lot when you wear it too(:
