What's your skin type? a foundation will not necessarily give you a cakey look it just depends on the foundation, how much you apply and how you apply it. I'd be happy to give you some recommendations once I know your skin type.

Because you want to cover pimples, I would personally opt for a foundation and then set it with a powder after. Caking isn't a problem when you find the right product for you!
Application wise, sponges are fairly universal and good to give you a natural coverage without too much oil build up. When you dampen a sponge it absorbs your foundation and releases a lot of the pigment while keeping back the oil which can really help with caking and makes foundations easier to layer of you need more coverage in certain areas.
If you have a lot of problem spots, you could also look into a concealer. But I definitely understand if you want the least amount of product on your face. A few nice concealers are:
-benefit fake up
-Maybelline fit me
-benefit Boi-ing (this is thicker)
-maybeline cover stick
As for foundations here are a few recommendations you may like:
•MUFE HD
(Medium to full coverage, very thin and natural looking, long wearing but pricier)
•REVLON nearly naked
(Very creamy for a natural skin like texture and build able coverage wise a bit of an oiler formula though)
•maybeline Fit me
(Just like the concealer, super easy to blend and very thin while still providing a good coverage. Long wearing.)
A really important step when it comes to face makeup is a good powder, you wanna set your foundation without caking it up and looking dry. My top three are
•Benefit Stay flawless powder
(satin finish, gives you an a beautiful glow without extra shine. Not necessarily for oily skin)
•Rimmel stay matte
(Everyone's holy grail for a reason, super subtle but is amazing at keeping your shine at bay. Pressed, and does not release too much product to avoid any excess product build up)
•Revlon photo ready powder
(Finish reminds me of the Rimmel stay matte, with less of the shine fighting power. Great for normal or combination skin. )

Yes I absolutely love the makeup forever foundation! I'm a totally foundation/concealer/powder junkie and always try new face products, I rarely go two days in a row with the same foundation (my poor wallet) I have very dry skin, and this doesn't sink into any of my dry patches at all. Because I have dry skin, I use a VERY intensive face cream which can give an oily effect around the t zone I find and this foundation works extremely well at just balancing out everything and not making me look like a hot mess. I think it'd be perfect for your combo skin :)

The MUFE HD I find definitely works the best with either a damp sponge for a flawless airbrush finish or a dense flat top Buffing brush for more coverage

Megan I have combo skin as well and love, love, love the Urban Decay Naked skin foundation. It's got medium but buildable coverage, a thin consistency, and blends into skin like a dream come true. I have a really uneven skin tone and this evens it out beautifully without looking or feeling like you're wearing a mask. I think it's around $35 or so. If I were you I would go to Sephora and pick up a few samples of the foundations you're interested in before making your final decision.

I absolutely live smashbox bb cream. I noticed it has more coverage than an average foundation (I love it with 2 layers), it looks good in pictures and it doesn't look like I'm wearing makeup at all.

Yes if you go in and ask they will give you samples of whichever foundation you want, up to 3.
Sav I am so sorry to hear that it broke you out! It has actually improved my skin quite a bit from before when I was constantly breaking out. Now I only get a few around my jawline during my monthly and that was the only change I made to my daily routine.

BareMinerals Original Foundation
Nude Skin-Glowing
MUFE) HD Invisible Cover Foundation
Chose for you few foundation with not too heavy coverage that will give you healthy glow and colour to your face.. All of the foundations above are ideal for combination skin. Most of them contain SPF 15. They will even out your skin tone and hide few pimples that you have. Your skin will shine though the foundation keeping it as natural as well! X hope I helped
