It sounds like you're on the right track, you may just need to blend more. I use powder to contour my nose, I find it easier to blend and it's more forgiving if you make any mistakes. But basically you just draw a line on both sides of your nose ending right before your nostril, and blend, blend, blend.

I use my MAC 217 to contour my nose, it's small enough to get it right on the side of my nose bridge and fluffy enough to blend it (/

I'd play around with different brushes and products. I find it best to apply cream contour just down the bridge on both sides. I then use a synthetic dense crease brush and sweep up under my brow bone, and down to my nostrils. Kind of like a windshield wiper motion that I would use in my eye crease. Then I blend down the sides of my nose in small circular motion.
