I'm sure that'd be fine but you'd probably be better off using an antibacterial soap or shampoo(:

Eep! What was the brush cleaner you used that made them fall apart?
I usually use Parsian Spirit or Baby Shampoo! Remember to disinfect/spot clean your brushes after every use.. it keeps them clean and easier to wash when it's time for a deep cleaning.

You can buy Parsian Spirit or Japonesque sells the same formula at Ulta. It works AWESOME. You can use brushes immediately after you wipe the brush cleanser off. Make sure you are drying your brushes off the side of a counter or UPSIDE DOWN. And do not use until completely dry. I have used dish soap which is very strong and my brushes are fine after years. Just make sure you are drying them so the water isn't seeping into where all the hairs are glued!

I bought the brush cleaner spray from Sephora. You spray your brush with the cleaner and swipe it back and forth (gently) on a paper towel. Its amazing! Also, I have used baby shampoo to clean my brushes. It is totally safe.

I spot clean my brushes with the MAC brush cleanser, but I deep clean them with either baby shampoo or the Loreal Kids shampoo (since they smell amazing!) I've washed a wide range of brushes with both of those products and had no problems whatsoever. Definitely second what Sarah and Jacqueline said, though. Make sure that you don't let any water get into the ferrule to prevent the glue from loosening thus resulting in brushes falling apart quickly.
